Developing a Bad Day? Listed below are 21 Things You Can Do to Turn It Around

how to turn a bad day around

“To impact the quality of the day, that is the highest of artistry. ”

Henry David Thoreau

“Don’t judge each day from the harvest you enjoy, but by the seed products you plant. ”

Robert Louis Stevenson

Some days are great, much better than you would have anticipated when you rolled from the bed in the morning.

Quite a few days are just good and OK days.

And then we have the other ones. The times that just end up being bad.

What do you do after that? I used to let them pull me down and I often wound up having not just one but a couple of bad times because of whatever occurred.

Nowadays I do items a bit differently. And this week I’d like to talk about how I do that.

Here’s twenty one tips and behavior that help me to turn a bad day close to. Most of the time I use several of these habits to achieve that.

1 . Breathe.

I start turning my day around with shaking things up by using my body in some way.

The first thing I actually almost always do would be to just breathe. I breathe deeply through my nose by utilizing my belly. We focus only over the air going in and out for 1-2 mins.

This particular calms my body plus mind.

2 . Do a power pose.

However sometimes follow that will up by striking what Amy Cuddy calls a power create for about 2 a few minutes (check out her TED talk, it’s really good).

The simplest way to strike a power pose is to stand up confidently like Wonder Woman or Superman with your legs apart, head up and your practical your hips.

It might sound odd but it can really change how you feel in a quick and optimistic way.

3. Exercise.

Another habit I  use several times a week to shake things up by using my body is to lift free weights inside my home. I do this particular for about 30-40 moments and it helps me to release tensions plus worry.

And after I am accomplished I feel more powerful, focused and energetic.

4. Hug.

Just by embracing someone quickly you can feel safer and much more optimistic again.

And a good embrace that will last 30 seconds or even a minute or more can recharge your electric batteries and release an unexpectedly large amount of stress and tensions.

5. Pet an animal.

If you don’t have anyone close by to hug during a poor day then family pet your cat, dog, bird etc . They have a very similar calming plus stress reliving effect.

And it also makes your animal companion happy which in turn will enhance your mood too.

six. Find a new viewpoint.

The body tips over often work well to alter my perspective simply by altering my psychological state and degree of energy.

Sometimes something more is needed though.

So I start looking a lot more actively for a much better and more helpful viewpoint on the situation with hand  by requesting myself a couple of queries.

3 of my most often used questions that help me with that are usually:

  • Will this issue 5 years from now?
  • Who cares?
  • What is one particular small action, one particular small and practical step I can take to start turning this very day or situation close to?

7. Venture out into nature and enjoy the summer.

Leave your own couch or work area for a little while.

Talk a walk and just saturate in the summer sun and warmth. Enjoy the chickens singing and the nature blossoming.

Just being available in nature tends to make it easier to believe optimistically again and to start looking for practical solutions or upsides.

Or you can simply be there in the moment fully and let your thoughts about for example work sleep for a while (and then later on you can go back to that with clean eyes and a more calm mind).

Another upside would be that the sunshine and exercise during this 20-30 moment pause in my day time also recharges my energy.

8. Accept what is.

One thing that sometimes work better than simply about anything is just to accept what is right now.

To not deny or try to push away bad feelings or thoughts that show up. Even though you may feel a good impulse to do so.

Instead, simply accept what is today.

The thoughts and feelings within a person.

And be with them fully and observe all of them flowing through you.

By doing so you are not giving up.

No, because when you accept what exactly is then you stop nourishing the negative thoughts in your head with more energy. And they also become weaker.

They begin to lose their grasp on you after a while and they float away. And so you feel more open and are in a position to think more obviously again.

9. If you made a mistake then don’t let your own inner critic control.

If you’re having a poor day because of a mistake you’ve made or even a failure you’ve acquired then don’t let your inner critic take over.

Instead, as soon as you listen to it start berating you in your mind along with negative thoughts about you and your worth do this:

Say an end phrase. In your mind, state or shout, something similar to: Stop!

Or: No, no, no we are not really going down this road again!

Then, after you have silenced your inner critic ask yourself this:

How would my friend/parent assistance me and help me in this situation?

Then simply do things and talk to yourself like he or she would.

This will help you to feel a lot better again and to move ahead to solve and enhance upon the situation. And it’s a much better utilization of your time and energy than beating your self up.

10. Tell yourself: Just for nowadays!

I learned that one from Brian Tracy probably 10 years ago.

And this case it can help you avoid dropping back into those damaging responses to a bad day that may are becoming a bit of a habit for you personally.

What exactly you do is this, tell yourself that:

Just for today I will X!

And in this case you can replace that X with for example “not beat myself up about a mistake! ” or “focus on solutions and action instead of procrastinating! ”.

The fine thing about this the first is that you only make a small commitment to do things differently nowadays.

Then you can certainly go back to your aged ways tomorrow if you want. But you may not wish to and perhaps you instead start building a positive spiral of positivity for the entire week.

Or you go back to your old ways occasionally and sometimes you utilize this tip to handle a bad day in a more constructive way (which is still an improvement when compared with doing things the old way 100% of the time)

11. Get outside of your own mind by adding positivity in order to someone else’s lifestyle.

One of the simplest techniques for getting outside of your own head and out of going deeper and much deeper into your own mental poison about your day would be to add positivity to someone else’s lifetime.

That will focus outward and on someone else can significantly shift your perspective around for the better.

You are able to for example:

  • Help someone out. With for example moving houses, along with planning for an upcoming meeting or by offering some advice that has helped you inside a similar situation that your friend is in today.
  • Just listen. Sometimes people just want someone to truly listen for the little while as they work out their own situation and possible solutions.
  • Be kind. Give a genuine accompany for something that means a lot to the other person or some thing she does which is often taken for granted.

12. Take 5-15 minutes to read some motivational quotes.

This is something I quite often do to change the mood and point of view and to find several new motivation.

Here’s 6 of the my favorite and most popular posts about quotes that I have put together over the past 10+ years:

  • 185 Inspiring Happiness Quotes
  • 101 Uplifting Self-Esteem and Self Love Quotes

13. Record about your day.

Writing down your thoughts and feelings about your day can assist you to mentally step back a step or two from what is happening and to see things with more clearness (and from a broader perspective).

Doing this has allowed me to many times to not create a mountain out of a molehill and to begin finding solutions to the current situation plus or at least a small step or two that I can take to begin relocating the right direction.

fourteen. Talk it over with someone to find that new perspective.

This can be a bit similar to journaling and it’s in my opinion one of the best ways to find a new perspective on a negative situation.

Because just letting your thoughts plus feelings about your own bad day bounce around in your head has a tendency to exaggerate things and can make you feel more and more powerless.

Yet letting those emotions and thoughts away helps to vent all of that built up inner stress and it allows you to start to either figure out the problem and what to do about it for yourself as your friend just listens.

Or the both of you can have a conversation about this and together think of a plan – or maybe the start of one – for what you can do to improve upon the situation you’re in.

15. Take a laugh break to get 10-15 minutes.

Few things can therefore easily relieve stress and inner stress and allow you to observe things from a lighter perspective as having a laugh and having fun.

So I often take a laugh break and watch, read or listen to something that makes me laugh. For example a favorite episode of The Simpsons, a couple of on-line comics I like (such as the Oatmeal plus Poorly Drawn Lines) or a bit of a standup show on Netflix.

16. Find some thing to look forward to.

Find something to look forward to or reward yourself with after you have done what you need to do today, no matter if that is boring function or a doctor’s visit that you’re nervous regarding.

For example that movie you’ve been looking forward to viewing coupled with your favorite take out food.

17. Have a shower.

My wife sometimes recommends this one to obtain a bit of a restart. And am often find that it works surprisingly well – considering how small effort it takes – to mentally restart a day that has not really begun well for me.

18. Clean up.

We find that taking a bath and then following that up with spending 5-10 minutes decluttering our workspace or house and organizing elements makes me feel more in control again and more ready to start anew and care for what I need to do to enhance my current situation.

Therefore try that combination or combine that will shower with one of the other tips in this post to get an even better effect.

19. Make use of gratitude.

When you’re having a bad day time or you’re in some kind of bad circumstance then you may get lost in just seeing the damaging things in your life.

A way to counter that and to break away the pessimism that can suck out so much of your energy and capture you in inaction is to ask yourself a few questions that help you to tap into gratitude.

So ask yourself these types of 3 questions:

  • What are 3 things I can be thankful for in my living today?
  • Who are 3 individuals I can be thankful to have in my lifetime and why?
  • What are 3 things I can be thankful for about myself?

These items don’t have to be huge things. They could just be the nice weather conditions, that you have access to thoroughly clean drinking water, that you flossed today or that the friend made a person laugh yesterday.

twenty. Look back and enjoy how far you’ve arrive.

Another thing that is simple to lose sight of when you’re straight down and you’re working with a bad day is exactly what you have actually achieved so far.

The steps you have taken, the hurdles you have overcome and exactly what you have learned.

Reflect on that when you’re having a bad day to find a broader perspective and to observe that this one day is really a temporary step back and nothing more on your journey.

And take a couple of minutes to appreciate and enjoy what you have done so far to move yourself towards your goal or wish.

21. Remember: sometimes a bad day time will just be an undesirable day.

Now, on occasion, even if you use several of the techniques over – one after the other – a person won’t be able to switch a bad day about.

Which has been my experience at least.

Mainly because no matter what habits you adopt, life will never be perfect, optimistic or awesome all the time.

Which website was never about living some type of life that just exists in a perfect dream anyway.

This website is all about replacing unhelpful habits with better types.

It really is about raising the particular percentages of times where you can handle things inside a better way. In your regular, everyday life. So when bigger things happen.

Due to the fact that will make a huge distinction.

But nevertheless, life will have organic valleys.

And a bad day time will sometimes just be a bad day. And that’s OK. That is life.

But the interesting point is this: if you take that life is like this sometimes – and let go of the desire perfection – then you’ll create less suffering for yourself and life will become lighter, simpler and more happy.

Therefore in the long run there is an benefit even to a bad day that you may not have to get able to turn around.
