Success Beyond What We Are designed for

I know several who long to create a mark in their industry. I know writers who have long to get that first contract plus publish that very first great novel. I understand musicians who desire to get noticed and obtain signed and get recorded. I know speakers who are convinced they could create their mark if only they could be invited to that first conference, provide that first keynote, inspire that very first audience. I know plus admire many such people and often discover myself rooting on their behalf.

Yet even while I cheer them on from the sidelines of their lives, even while I attempt to motivate them as much as I’m able, there is 1 prayer I cause them to become pray amidst all their longing: “God, give me only as much achievement as I can handle. ”

It has long been my observation that most people can handle failing better than success. In case failure tends to encourage innovation, success has a tendency to breed stagnation. If failure tends to event humility, success has a tendency to engender pride. When failure tends to activate dependence, success has a tendency to generate self-reliance. I got seen people who appeared to be making great strides in godliness, great advances in upright and holy residing, until they accomplished success and acquired acclaim. It was after that that their improvement seemed to screech to some near halt or even to reverse alone. When they gained the thing they had longed meant for, they lost the particular progress they had labored for. I have seen far more people ruined by success than by failure.

The reason is simple enough: Their own success outpaced their particular sanctification. The level of their accomplishments rose quicker than the growth of their character. Their professional achievements came in the cost of spiritual achievements. They gained a lot more success than they could handle and it led to great harm.

The God exactly who opposes the happy but gives elegance to the humble loves it when we pray and ask him meant for his blessings. He or she honors it when we pray with submissive hearts. He admires it when we hope with an awareness of the weaknesses, an awareness of our own temptations, and then plead for his strength and deliverance. Older Agur begged Our god to give him none poverty nor wealth, but only as much he needed, regarding he knew that with full wallets and a full stomach he would be tempted to deny the particular Lord’s past providence and with empty storage compartments and an empty stomach he would be tempted to doubt the Lord’s future supply. While he would declare credit for any large quantity, he would censure Our god for any lack. Knowing his weaknesses, he or she asked God to give him no more than can handle.

Those who pray for no more than they can handle will find joy and the reassurance of even modest achievements, for they will know plus trust that God has given all of them what is for their greatest and withheld from their website what would be to their particular harm. Their phoning is not to resent the lowly 1 talent or 2 that God provides assigned to them, not to bury that small bit in the ground whilst grumbling about lacking more, but to be faithful with it and to steward it nicely. They can do this with gladness and self-confidence, trusting that Lord has given them what he, in the providence, has established is needful plus best. He has withheld from them no good issue.

But , naturally , it would be wrong to allow them to rest on their little laurels, assuming that they can be of no higher use to the Lord and also to his purposes. Even as they humbly accept what the Lord offers assigned to them, it must be their joy to carry on to grow in godliness, to continue to pursue holiness, to continue to trust that because they grow in sophistication, they may be preparing their character to handle a lot more success and with this more opportunities to good to others and bring glory in order to God. For to pray, “God, produce only as much achievement as I can handle” is to accept the task to become ready to deal with more.
