Exactly why a Lousy Outreach Ministry Works So Well
Why a Lousy Outreach Ministry Works So Well
Several years ago, almost within the prehistoric ages, We served as pastor of a church with a traditional outreach plan. It was cold-call, ineffective, and poorly attended.
I produced a seemingly brilliant decision that was stupid. I eliminated this program.
It seemed reasonable. We could not really identify one person we had reached evangelistically in a given time. Why should we carry on and waste our time on something that didn’t work?
From Vibrancy to Listlessness
For over annually, our church noticed many people follow Christ. We were growing. There was palpable energy. The particular Holy Spirit has been visibly at work within our church.
After that lethargy hit. It had been dramatic. Within days after stopping an ineffective and ill-attended outreach program, our church seemed to have lost its Spirit-given energy.
How could this change transpire? We had no proof the traditional outreach plan amounted to everything positive.
A Case Study in 2021
We have an outreach resource from Church Answers called “Pray & Proceed. ” It has been obtained well by many church buildings. Its concept is simple. Church members stroll in a neighborhood plus pray for the people in the homes. They don’t stop at a home. They don’t knock on doors. They will pray and then visit the door and depart a door hanger. The hanger states something like, “We interceded for you. ” It offers the address from the church, an email or even text number pertaining to prayer requests, as well as the church’s website.
We get reports regularly from church leaders who talk about excitedly about the number of individuals who have visited the church as a consequence of these types of efforts. We have heard of many who have become followers of Christ.
But then all of us heard from a church that used “Pray & Go” to achieve thousands of homes before the first person responded. Let me share the story from the pastor’s email:
I just wanted to reach out to you because we began Pray & Use the fall of 2018. I actually listened to your training and thought this is exactly what we need to do. We are a church within the inner-city / a church revitalization. Within the past two years, we have prayed for 4, 542 homes up to this point. We haven’t seen people coming to the church because of “Pray & Go, ” but we always seem to have site visitors whenever we are praying in our community. Earlier this week we noticed our first family come through the doors of the church due to Pray & Proceed.
Our team was thrilled when I told them because of your persistance in praying for the community we had children connect to the cathedral. I just wanted to pass this along, and motivate someone doing this that just because you might not become seeing the results through something keep performing it and you never know. It could take you praying with regard to 4, 542 homes before you see individuals you are praying designed for connect with your chapel. The one thing that keeps us going is Galatians 6: nine: “Let us not really become weary in doing good, designed for at the proper period we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. ”
Did you will get that? They put door hangers on 4, 542 homes before the first guest came along as a result of these efforts. But during the whole time of “Pray & Go” they noticed a steady flow of visitors.
The particular Principle at Work
It is simply called “the principle associated with obedience. ” Although we can’t manage God’s work, he or she does seem to bless those churches that are making any hard work to pray with regard to and reach their particular communities. I hope the majority of churches don’t have in making 4, 542 visits before someone comes up directly from those efforts.
But Also i hope churches will discover fruit from their behavior, even if the results never seem to be direct.
Is your church seeing many guests arrive through the doors? Is your church reaching many people for Christ? Perhaps it’s time pertaining to obedience. A weakened outreach ministry often has positive corollary benefits.
Plus a weak outreach ministry is certainly better than no outreach ministry whatsoever.
