Would you Use Some Joy Today?

I actually abominate commercials for the lottery. Though you can find thousands of variations of such ads, all of them play off a common theme: Money brings joy. One current ad showed people practicing the delighted dance they would perform when they found out that they had won millions of dollars. An additional had people describing the things they would purchase for themselves whenever they finally came into excellent wealth. In one way or another, all these advertisements express the same concept: more money equals a lot more happiness.

Of course there really is some connection between money and pleasure. Christians can sometimes speak as if more money just ever brings more difficulties, but that will tends to be expressed by people who have never fought with true low income. There really is pleasure to be had in the types of possessions and encounters that money can earn us. “Everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving…” Agur said it nicely when he interceded, “give me nor poverty nor wealth; feed me using the food that is needful for me, lest I be full plus deny you and say, ‘Who is the MASTER? ’ or lest I be bad and steal plus profane the name of the God. ”

But we need not be Christians for long before we understand that the greatest joy connected to wealth does not come from gaining yet from giving. Hoarding wealth for ourselves gives far less lasting satisfaction than contributing wealth to God’s causes. Where we tend to associate joy with how much we get, higher joy originates from how freely we give.

We see this particular in various places within the Bible, but perhaps never more obviously than in the closing verses of 1 Stories. Here King Jesse stands before the individuals of Israel to inform them about the temple his son will certainly soon build and to ask them to provide for this. After describing just how he has diligently set aside the best of their own wealth for the brow, he asks, “Who then will offer willingly, consecrating himself these days to the LORD? ” David is blessed and encouraged to see the people give along with extreme generosity so that soon there are excellent piles of gold, silver, bronze, metal, and precious stones—all they could ever want or need to create a magnificent temple to the Lord.

It is in this context that people find words that will stand in razor-sharp contrast to every lottery commercial ever filmed. “Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for having a whole heart they had offered freely towards the Lord. David the particular king also rejoiced greatly. ” At the end of this great outpouring of generosity, the minds of the people and their ruler are overflowing with joy, overcome with love for God. This appreciate is generated not by getting, but by giving. The joy has flowed directly from their generosity.

David is so shifted that he leads the folks in prayer plus asks “Who am I, and what will be my people, that individuals should be able thus to offer willingly? ” In humility this individual marvels that Lord has allowed them to experience such joy. That are they that Our god should grant them the blessing associated with so great a enjoyment? This is more than Our god owes them, a lot more than they deserve.

The lottery advertisements have it all wrong. They have it all backward. The truest pleasure and the most long lasting joy—the joy that will bridges earth in order to heaven—is the joy of giving. And so I ask, could you use some joy these days? Are you downcast or discouraged? Then perhaps the best thing would be to prevent scrolling through Amazon . com and to stop hoping that you would obtain all those things you really miss. Instead, consider exactly what God has provided you with, whether wealth, period, talents, or gifts, and consider how you can use them to express generosity to someone else. Think about how you can give to other people what God offers given you, for because David acknowledged, “all things come from a person, and of your own possess we given you. ” Consecrate it to his cause and experience his true blessing. Give it back to him and experience his joy.
