No matter what Is False, No matter what Is Immoral, Whichever Is Prejudiced…

We live at the same time of great public immorality, a time in which the just thing that is shameful is shame by itself. Immorality is associated with entertainment and the basest sexual perversions are flaunted on-screen for all to see. Television shows compete among on their own to explore and transgress any boundary. The very things that marked a good man a few years ago mark a bigoted or repressed one today. Society is really saturated with immorality it is impossible to prevent ourselves from getting inundated with it.

In the midst of this morass, Christians are given the command that may appear impossible. We are informed to have pure thoughts, holy minds, thoughts that have been supernaturally restored by the Spirit associated with God so they now treasure what The almighty treasures and abhor what God abhors. It is not enough that individuals refuse to practice bad, but we must not fixate on it or even think about it. Some elements are so shameful, therefore opposed to God’s purpose and plan for humanity, that we should not actually ponder them, not really speak of them, most certainly not laugh about them. The particular deeds of darkness are to be left for those with hearts of darkness.

In such a difficult context, it is crucial that we avoid what exactly is vile and pursue what is lovely. We must be disciplined within guarding our minds from what is odious to God and, therefore , ought to be odious to us. All of us guard our minds by guarding the minds, and we safeguard our minds by guarding our hearing and eyes. The hearts tend not to desire what our minds do not consider, and our minds will not consider what our own ears do not hear and our eyes do not see. Because of this , the Bible particularly warns us in order to steer our thoughts toward those things which are pleasing to The almighty. The Apostle John says it such as this: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is definitely honorable, whatever is just, whatever is real, whatever is beautiful, whatever is good, if there is any quality, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the Lord of peace will be with you. ” Work peace flows to people whose minds are usually untouched and unsullied by the depravity close to us. It flows to those who self-discipline their minds in order to meditate on everything that is lovely and pleasing to Our god.

It is occasionally wise for us to look at the Bible’s claims, to examine the problems that lead to them, and then to reverse those conditions to find out what will happen whenever we take the opposite method. If the great promise at the end of this little passage is the relaxing presence of Lord, the tacit warning is the lack of that peaceful presence. Those who follow these words will find God near, yet those who disobey all of them will find him much.

What does it look like to disobey him on this? We can turn the particular passage around to find out. “Finally, brothers, whichever is false, whichever is immoral, whichever is prejudiced, no matter what is filthy, whatever is base, what ever is reprehensible, if there is any inferiority, when there is anything worthy of skin, think about these things. Whatever you have learned and received and heard plus seen on television—practice these things, and the Lord of peace is going to be distant from you. ” If divine peace flows toward those who discipline their minds to fixate upon all that is wonderful and pleasing to God, divine peace flows away from those who allow their thoughts to fixate upon all that is unattractive and on all that can be displeasing to God.

And in in this way we see the problem before us. Presently there may have been times during the past when it took concerted effort to see and experience immorality; these days it takes concerted energy to avoid seeing it. And so we must put great effort directly into steering our minds away from what is bitter to God plus into steering them toward what this individual loves. We must intentionally discipline ourselves to think about only what recognizes God, only what exactly is pleasing to your pet, only what results in his sweet serenity.
