Over the years, Jared Wilson provides written quite a number of books that cope with the nature of the chapel and with ministry within the church. The latest, Gospel-Driven Ministry is definitely, according to the subtitle, “An Introduction to the Contacting and Work of a Pastor. ” “This book, ” he says, “is about the ways in which those given the particular stewardship of this secret [the gospel of Jesus Christ]—pastors of local churches—must meditate on it, say it, and adorn it with their lives (and their deaths). ” It is, in other words, a book for pastors who want to prove faithful stewards of the most precious gift of God’s sophistication.
The first 2 chapters deal with The Pastor and The Power—the character, calling, plus commissioning of the pastor himself, and the strength he is given to execute his work before the Lord. The task of the pastor is to speak to people’s souls, and also to do that, he must have real power offered to him. “There is just one place the pastor can find supernatural power—the Spirit of Our god working through the message of the gospel, the particular finished work of the Son of Lord. ” The key in order to successful ministry lies not in method and not in applications, but in the gospel, for pastors “are called primarily to the gospel—to believe this, to dwell inside it, and to proclaim this. ”
Out there foundational matters, Wilson advances to worship, for the pastor is to be the lead worshiper, and to preaching, for just one of the pastor’s most sacred tasks is to proclaim the truths of Scripture. “As pastors we are guide worshipers. We may not really know how to read music or carry a tune in a container, but this is not ultimately about singing. It is about the passion in our hearts and the concerted interest of our ministry. What and how we’re worshiping will capture on. Note well, pastor, that our individuals won’t necessarily obtain excited about what we let them know to be excited about. They are going to instead, over time, become excited about what we yourself are excited about. ” If the pastor will be excited about the gospel, that will manifest alone in preaching that is exultational—that rejoices in what Christ has done plus, therefore , proclaims his praise.
The particular pastor is also called to care, in order to lead, and to combat. He is called to care for the spiritual needs of the individuals in his charge. He or she is called to guide the congregation decisively but still humbly, to take upon himself numerous responsibilities but also to freely delegate. And he is called to fight against spiritual enemies, towards his own flesh, plus against the wolves that so often threaten in order to savage his head.
And then the pastor must reside and die in a way that is worthy of imitation—to live a meaningful, dedicated life as being a Christian, church member, family man, plus citizen, then in order to joyfully leave it all behind so he is able to go and be using the Lord. “Christian ministry is not built upon religious know-how or leadership strategies. Alfredia ministry is the overflow of the mystery associated with God in Christ coming to bear on your own soul and, by means of yours, on the souls of others. Pastoral ministry is the intentional and careful stewardship of the mystery of the gospel. When you feel anxious by that actuality, you might be ready. ”
This book are at once theoretical and practical, at once a textbook and a manual. It is another solid entry in a growing body of work that is meant to tutorial pastors into a ministry that is centered on the gospel and driven by it. I’m glad to recommend it, along with Wilson’s many other titles which have come before it. It will prove valuable not only of a look at, but of repeated re-reads.
