The Unwritten Rules – The Real of the Organization

The unsaid rules are the true rules.

In any business, what is maintained plus repeated becomes a a part of culture. The way people do things, decisions are created, and how people react to change are a a part of tradition.

This is the DNA of an organization.

Unwritten rules may never be  recorded, identified on or “ put in the minutes”, but they are recognized by a majority of people.

People will protect and protect all of them. These are considered law and individuals will fight to keep them from getting changed or bended.

Understanding this will increase a leader’s performance.

Example

In an established church, I realized there  were cultural understandings I needed to understand. Therefore , I didn’t attempt to change some things the first couple of years. I knew these unwritten rules would possibly derail them.

How do you understand unwritten rules?

1st, be aware they can be found. So , look  for them.

Second, ask questions of people who have been there longer than you. Learn people you can trust to find out. Discuss how details are usually done plus unpack some of the choices you are considering.

Third, find out them  by experience, as you approach any kind of change.   Pay attention to what will go against them.

This is also why you don’t build change in the vacuum. Collaborate with others and strategically introduce change.

Even a guru at creating brand new ideas must still understand this principle.

The unwritten rules very first.

This doesn’t imply you can’t go against unwritten rules. You certainly can. However , if you don’t understand them you’ll waste a lot of energy. As a result, you will wonder the reason why your ideas never obtained traction.
